When it comes to sangiovese, the most notable and profound wines are from the town of Montalcino, where they call their local clone of sangiovese “brunello.” Over the years the local fruit in Montalcino developed into a way that made bigger, bolder wines than in the nearby Chianti, Montepulciano, and Scansano, each of which have local variations on this versatile grape.
La Fortuna makes their brunello with plenty of power and structure, but it is still approachable and very drinkable. Big, brooding, complex fruit notes are complimented by smoky, leathery aromas which develop and harmonize as this wine opens up. Certainly a good bottle to share with good food and company, and enjoy some of the best red wine Tuscany has to offer!
